The FDA and USDA have jointly approved two companies to sell lab-grown chicken in US grocery stores, marking a historic moment for the cultivated meat industry as products move from restaurants to retail.
The Products
Upside Foods and Good Meat will sell cultivated chicken breasts and nuggets at select Whole Foods and Kroger locations starting June 2026. Initial pricing is $8.99 per pound — competitive with organic chicken.
Taste Test
In blind taste tests, 72% of consumers couldn't distinguish lab-grown from conventional chicken. The products contain identical nutritional profiles to farm-raised chicken.
