The plant-based seafood sector is experiencing its biggest growth period yet, with sales jumping 42 percent year-over-year according to data from the Good Food Institute. Products mimicking shrimp, tuna, and salmon have led the charge, driven by improvements in taste and texture that have won over skeptical consumers.
Companies like Good Catch and New Wave Foods have expanded distribution to major grocery chains nationwide, while several fast-casual restaurant brands have added plant-based fish tacos and poke bowls to their menus. Industry analysts attribute the growth to rising concerns about ocean sustainability and microplastic contamination in traditional seafood.
Not everyone is convinced, however. Critics argue that many plant-based seafood products rely heavily on processed ingredients and sodium. Nutritionists recommend reading labels carefully and choosing options with whole-food bases like hearts of palm, jackfruit, or algae protein.
