A coalition of registered dietitians is pushing back against the booming liver detox supplement industry, stating that most products lack scientific evidence and some contain ingredients that may actually stress the liver. The group reviewed 40 popular supplements and found that 28 made health claims not supported by clinical trials.

Several products contained dangerously high doses of certain herbal extracts that have been linked to liver toxicity in published case studies. Dietitians emphasize that a healthy liver detoxifies itself naturally and that the best support comes from a balanced diet, adequate hydration, and limiting alcohol consumption.

Consumers are urged to consult healthcare providers before starting any supplement regimen marketed as a detox or cleanse.
