Plant-based seafood alternatives are experiencing their biggest growth period yet, with sales up 47 percent year-over-year according to new retail data released this week. Shrimp and tuna alternatives lead the category.

Several major grocery chains have expanded their plant-based seafood sections, dedicating full shelf space to brands offering everything from crab cakes to smoked salmon made from konjac root and algae protein.

Industry analysts attribute the surge to improved taste and texture profiles, as well as growing consumer concern about ocean sustainability and microplastic contamination in wild-caught fish.
