A major new study published in The Lancet found that strict adherence to a Mediterranean diet reduced dementia risk by 23 percent over a 12-year follow-up period. The research tracked more than 60,000 participants across seven countries.
Researchers identified olive oil consumption, regular fish intake, and abundant vegetable servings as the three strongest protective factors. Participants who consumed at least four tablespoons of olive oil daily saw the greatest cognitive benefits.
The findings add to a growing body of evidence supporting dietary interventions as a frontline strategy for brain health and disease prevention as populations age worldwide.
